CTS 250k linear potentiometer is mainly used for tone control. It is occasionally employed for volume control. Why some guitarists use linear pots on their Gibson or other guitars?
Gibson has historically used different potentiometer values and tapers over the years, leading to much discussion. However, when a linear taper pot is used in a Les Paul, it is almost always for the volume control for the following reasons:
Smoother, More Gradual Volume Control... Uniform Change: A linear (or "B-taper") pot changes resistance uniformly throughout its rotation. This means that when the knob is turned from 10 to 5, the signal reduction is spread evenly across that range.
The "Clean-Up" Factor: Many Les Paul players use the volume knob to "clean up" a heavily overdriven amplifier. The linear taper allows for a more gradual and predictable transition from full volume (dirty) down to a lower volume (cleaner) tone. You get finer control over the subtle levels of breakup and crunch.

If your guitar is an import... and you want to update the pots, you may have to enlarge the diameter of the holes on the body very slightly.
When installing a knob, be sure to pinch lightly on both sides of the end of the shaft toward the center before installing it. This will prevent you from applying too much pressure and breaking the pot. If this has never happened to you before...
