- Controls: The volume and tone potentiometers (pots) and the pickup selector switch are secured to the underside of the guard.

- Wiring: The wiring harness connects all these components behind the pickguard.

- Aesthetics: The pickguard's color, ply, and material are a major part of the Stratocaster's visual identity, often contrasting with the body color.
